St Andrews is known worldwide as ‘the home of golf’. The iconic Old Course is the oldest course in the world, dating back to 1552 when Archbishop John Hamilton signed the ‘Golfer’s Charter’, which recognised the right of the townspeople to play golf, shooting, and all games on the Links. The game grew in popularity over the nineteenth century, and the town proudly boasts the ‘Grand Old Man of Golf’, Old Tom Morris, as one of its own. The golfing buzz continues today: the seven Links courses attract tourists from across the globe, and the town hosts major championships, most recently The 150th Open. The Himalayas
Having been inspired by the golfing greats who have played the St Andrews Links courses on your museum trip, we’re sure that you’ll be itching to give the game a go yourself! Just a ten minute walk from the centre of town, the The Himalayas nine-hole putting course is open daily from April to October. Challenging, competitive, and, above all, fun, this is a great way to spend an afternoon. Tee times can be booked online.
Walking the Old Course
Following in the footsteps of some of the most well-known golfers, all residents of and visitors to the town can walk the hallowed route of the Old Course on Sundays. With beautiful views along the West Sands and back across the ‘auld grey toun’, this really is a walk to remember. Auchterlonies of St Andrews
Founded by the Open champion Willie Auchterlonie in 1895, and one of the oldest golf shops in town, Auchterlonies is well worth a visit if you are an avid golfer looking for equipment or clothing. The shop stocks Callaway, Footjoy, Titleist, TaylorMade, Ping and Galvin Green and many other world-leading brands.
The 19th Hole, The Dunvegan
Just a few minutes’ walk from the 18th hole of the iconic Old Course, the Dunvegan is THE place where golfers head for a drink. You’ll be immersed in the golfing heritage of the town — from ceiling to floor, the bar is covered with memorabilia and photographs of famous golfers. Enjoy a pint or two with friends whilst reminiscing about your day in the ‘home of golf’.
18 at Rusacks, St Andrews
To round off your golf-themed day, we’d highly recommend 18 at Rusacks, St Andrews for a special evening meal. This top floor restaurant has unparalleled views over the Old Course and out along the West Sands. It’s a simply breathtaking place to enjoy an evening meal. The Rock & Spindle
In the warmer months, the Rock & Spindle situated just out of town at the Castle Course is another excellent location for a drink. Soak up the panoramic views back over St Andrews Bay whilst enjoying local ales and whiskeys, or even a cocktail.

We couldn’t finish without mentioning the seven Links courses that St Andrews boasts: the Old, the New, the Strathtyrum, the Jubilee, the Eden, the Castle, and the Balgove. The courses are all beautifully kept, with each having its own challenges and personality. St Andrews really is the perfect place for a luxury golfing holiday. There are also a wealth of other courses in the local area which are well worth a try up at the Fairmont Hotel, situated just outside St Andrews, and along the coast at Kingsbarns and Elie.
