“Haste ye back, we love you dearly

Call again you’re welcome here.

May all your days be free from sorrow

And your friends be ever near.”

Robert Burns (1759-1796)

With just under two weeks to go until Burns Day, why not book a getaway to St Andrews and raise a glass to the famous bard?

The day is filled with feasting, poetry recitations, toasts, speeches, ceilidhs, music, and much merriment — it’s not one to be missed, and there’s truly no better way to experience authentic Scottish culture.

The tradition dates back to the fifth anniversary of Robert Burns’ death, upon which his closest friends gathered in Alloway for a wee dram to toast the life and work of the famous poet, though today the commemorative events take place on 25 January, the date of his birth.

At the heart of the celebration is a traditional Burns Supper.

The meal usually begins with a hearty soup, either Cullen skink, a chowder made from smoked haddock, or cock-a-leekie which, as the name suggests, comprises chicken and leeks. This is followed by haggis, neeps, and tatties, and sometimes a main of grouse, pheasant, or venison. Cranachan, a traditional dessert of whipped cream, oats, and raspberries, follows, and the feasting is then rounded off with a wee dram (or two) and a cheeseboard.

Whilst holidaying in St Andrews, we’d recommend that you book a table at Stewarts Resort for their ‘Big Burns Bash’. It’s a three course meal packed with traditional Scottish delicacies —

For reservation call Stewarts Resort Reception at 01334 788121 or drop an email at info@premierstaysfife.co.uk.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer a more intimate affair, then why not order the limited edition ‘Haar at Home’ Burns Box to enjoy back at your rental property. The three or four course luxury menu with optional drinks pairings sounds simply sublime!

Ahead of your traditional Burns Supper, why not book a tour of Kingsbarns Distillery and enjoy tasting their award-winning single malt ‘Dream to Dram’ and a selection of other whiskies? It’s a great outing for whisky connoisseurs and novices alike.
