St Andrews restaurants punch well above their weight. For a small university town on the edge of the North Sea, it does a remarkable amount with the fish and shellfish landed along this coast. Several of its best tables even come with a view of the water.
This guide is for the dinners that matter, from an anniversary to a night when you both fancy something better than a pub supper. If you want the wider picture, our round-up of places to eat in St Andrews covers casual spots too.
Where to Find Romantic Restaurants in St Andrews
Most of the top restaurants in St Andrews for a special night sit at the west end of town. They cluster around the Old Course and The Scores. Here the views open out across the bay towards West Sands, and drinks and dinner are a few minutes apart on foot. If one of you golfs, you’ll be eating within sight of the most famous links in the game.
The other option is to head a short way out of town. A couple of the best dining rooms in the area are out in the countryside. You swap sea views for farmland and a quieter evening.
One rule applies everywhere. These are small rooms, so book ahead and don’t count on a walk-in table at the weekend.
Best Seafood Restaurants in St Andrews for a Date Night
The Seafood Ristorante
If you only book one seafood restaurant in St Andrews, make it this one. The Seafood Ristorante is a glass box built out over the beach on Bruce Embankment, just behind the Royal and Ancient clubhouse. The views run along the shore to West Sands, which is about as romantic as a dinner setting gets in Fife.

Seafood arrives daily from trusted suppliers. The kitchen pairs Scottish fish and shellfish with an Italian accent, and the restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide. It closes on Sundays at the time of writing.
Haar
A short walk from the Old Course, Haar is chef Dean Banks’s flagship at 1 Golf Place. Banks reached the final of MasterChef: The Professionals in 2018. The restaurant takes its name from the cold sea fog that rolls in off the North Sea.
Seafood leads the menu, and Haar features in the 2026 Michelin Guide. It’s a natural pick if you want the Old Course on your doorstep for a pre-dinner walk.

Tailend
Not every date needs a tablecloth. Tailend on Market Street is a fish restaurant and takeaway owned by Arbroath fish merchants, so the fish has not travelled far. Order a proper fish supper or a plate of Arbroath smokies and eat in. On a fine evening you could carry it outside instead, though the gulls will have opinions.

Which St Andrews Restaurants Suit a Special Occasion?
18 at Rusacks
For a drink or dinner with a view, head up to 18, the rooftop bar and restaurant at Rusacks St Andrews. It sits on the fourth floor and overlooks the 18th green of the Old Course, with West Sands stretching away beyond.
The kitchen cooks Scottish seafood and meat over open flames on a robata grill. Ask for a window table and go while there’s still light, because the view is the main event.

The Grange Inn
Just outside town on Grange Road, The Grange Inn occupies a 17th-century converted farmhouse with views back over St Andrews and the bay. The cooking is modern Scottish and leans on local produce.
It’s a small restaurant, with only around 26 seats. That keeps the room intimate, but it also means you should book well in advance, especially for a weekend.

How to Plan a Romantic Dinner in St Andrews
When should you book?
As early as you can. Weekend tables at the best restaurants St Andrews has go quickly in any season. The town gets busier still during university graduation weeks and big golf events, when families and visitors snap up tables early.
Opening days also shift through the year, and plenty of places close for one or two nights a week. Check the restaurant’s own website before you plan the evening around it.
Is it worth leaving town for dinner?
For one meal, yes. The Peat Inn sits about six miles from St Andrews and has held a Michelin star since 2010. Geoffrey Smeddle runs it as a restaurant with rooms, but most diners make the trip there and back by taxi.
Book the taxi when you book the table. Country roads after a long dinner are nobody’s idea of romance.
How do you get around town?
Within St Andrews you can walk between all the west-end restaurants above. The walk along The Scores after dark is part of the evening. If you’re staying outside town, book a taxi home in advance, especially on weekends and during graduation weeks. For the rest of your trip, our local guide to St Andrews covers the beaches and the golf.
